The 2026 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council Press Week came to a successful and memorable conclusion, bringing together journalists, government officials, media executives, corporate leaders, traditional rulers, and distinguished personalities in a week-long celebration of press freedom, professionalism, and excellence in journalism.

The annual event, organised by the NUJ Lagos State Council, featured a series of impactful activities designed to strengthen the media profession, encourage ethical journalism, and foster collaboration between the press and other critical sectors of society. Throughout the week, participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions, networking sessions, recognition ceremonies, and professional engagements aimed at promoting responsible journalism and national development.

The grand finale attracted an impressive gathering of media practitioners from various print, broadcast, and digital media organisations across the state, alongside policymakers, captains of industry, civil society organisations, and friends of the media.

Among the notable guests was the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, whose presence added prestige to the occasion. In her keynote address, she applauded journalists for their resilience and unwavering commitment to informing, educating, and shaping public opinion. She urged media professionals to continue upholding truth, fairness, objectivity, and ethical standards in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities, stressing that responsible journalism remains vital to democracy and good governance.

The event also witnessed the attendance of respected media personalities, executives, public servants, corporate organisations, and representatives of professional bodies who commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists for sustaining the annual Press Week as a platform for celebrating excellence within the profession.

One of the major highlights of the celebration was the presentation of awards to outstanding journalists and media professionals whose dedication, integrity, and contributions have positively impacted the journalism profession and society at large. The award ceremony recognised individuals who have distinguished themselves through investigative reporting, ethical journalism, humanitarian service, leadership, media innovation, and community development.

Recipients expressed appreciation to the NUJ Lagos Correspondents' Chapel for recognising their hard work and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting credible journalism, public accountability, and national development.

The atmosphere throughout the week reflected unity, camaraderie, and renewed commitment among journalists to uphold the principles of the profession despite evolving challenges within the media industry. Participants described the programme as one of the most successful editions in recent years, noting the quality of discussions, impressive turnout, excellent organisation, and meaningful recognition accorded deserving media practitioners.

The 2026 Press Week further reinforced the Nigeria Union of Journalists' commitment to protecting press freedom, promoting continuous professional development, and encouraging excellence in journalism. It also provided an opportunity for media professionals to reflect on their responsibilities in strengthening democracy, combating misinformation, and fostering peace and development through accurate, balanced, and responsible reporting.

As the curtain fell on the week's activities, participants departed with renewed inspiration, stronger professional networks, and a shared determination to continue serving society with integrity, courage, and excellence. The successful celebration once again demonstrated the important role of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in advancing the interests of journalists while promoting professionalism and ethical standards within Nigeria's media landscape.
