Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress after winning the party’s primary election held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the APC Secretariat in Acme, Ogba, Lagos.

The primary election was conducted across the 245 wards in the 20 Local Government Areas of Lagos State and was described by party officials as peaceful, transparent, and orderly. The election committee chairman and returning officer, retired General Jon Temlong, officially announced the result before party leaders, stakeholders, lawmakers, and members of the APC.

Dr. Hamzat secured a landslide victory with 657,917 votes out of the 657,974 accredited votes cast during the primary election. His main challenger, Olanrewaju “Lanre” Jim-Kamal, scored only one vote, while another aspirant, Samuel Ajose, withdrew from the race before the commencement of voting.

The victory marked a major political milestone for Dr. Hamzat, who became the governorship flag bearer of the APC ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election. Party leaders and supporters celebrated his emergence, describing him as a loyal party man with years of public service experience.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Hamzat thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, party leaders, and APC members across the state for their confidence in him.

He pledged to continue building on the development and progress already achieved in Lagos State while promoting people-focused governance and inclusive development.
