Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda charges Journalists On Ethical Practice , Professionalism at NUJ , Correspondent's chapel Lagos Press week

The Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has called on journalists to remain steadfast in upholding the principles of truth, fairness, accuracy, and responsible journalism as the media continues to play a pivotal role in Nigeria's democratic development.

Rt. Hon.Meranda made the call while delivering her keynote address at the Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week, an event that attracted media practitioners, government officials, captains of industry, and distinguished personalities from across the state.



Addressing the gathering, the deputy Speaker described journalism as a noble profession and one of the strongest pillars of democracy, urging practitioners to discharge their constitutional responsibility with courage, integrity, and a deep sense of patriotism.


She stressed that the fight against misinformation, fake news, and sensational reporting requires journalists to embrace continuous professional development, fact-checking, and adherence to the ethics of the profession.



According to her, "The responsibility placed on journalists is enormous. Your words shape public opinion, influence government policies, and educate society. It is therefore imperative that every report is guided by truth, fairness, balance, and professionalism."


Rt. Hon. Meranda further advised journalists to always verify information before publication, avoid the temptation of spreading unconfirmed reports, and ensure that national interest, peace, and social cohesion remain paramount in their reportage.


She also encouraged media practitioners to leverage emerging digital technologies positively while maintaining the credibility that has remained the hallmark of the profession.


She commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists , Correspondent's chapel for its unwavering commitment to promoting press freedom, media excellence, and capacity building for its members. She described the annual Press Week as an important platform for reflection, networking, and strengthening the partnership between the media and government.



Her presence at the event added glamour and prestige to the colourful ceremony, drawing admiration from participants who applauded her warm disposition, humility, and commitment to engaging with the media.


The atmosphere became even more vibrant as journalists and guests welcomed the deputy Speaker with enthusiastic applause, reflecting the cordial relationship she has continued to build with members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm.


The event featured goodwill messages from prominent personalities, discussions on contemporary media issues, recognition of outstanding journalists, and renewed commitments towards ethical journalism and national development.


Many participants described RT.Hon  Meranda's address as inspiring and timely, noting that her message reinforced the need for journalists to remain watchdogs of society while promoting peace, accountability, transparency, and sustainable development.


The NUJ Press Week continues to serve as an annual celebration of the media profession, bringing together journalists and stakeholders to deliberate on issues affecting the industry and chart a progressive path for the future of journalism in Nigeria.
