 LAGOS NUJ CORRESPONDENTS’ CHAPEL NAMES DR. FESTUS OSHOBA KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR 2026 PRESS WEEK


The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has unveiled renowned media entrepreneur and medical professional, Dr. Festus Oshoba, as the keynote speaker for its 2026 Press Week scheduled for June 27.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the NUJ Secretariat, Ladi Lawal Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, as part of activities lined up for the annual gathering of journalists, media stakeholders, policymakers and members of the public.

Dr. Oshoba, Publisher of The Merit Newspaper and Chief Consultant Ophthalmologist at Ladkem Specialist Eye Hospital, Lagos, is expected to deliver a keynote address on the theme: “Journalism and Nation Building: Promoting Accountability and Good Governance.”

The lecture is expected to highlight the critical role of the media in strengthening democratic institutions, advancing press freedom, promoting ethical journalism and fostering transparency in governance. Participants are also expected to gain valuable insights into how responsible journalism can contribute to building a more accountable and inclusive democratic society in Nigeria.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Abraham Akpabio, described Dr. Oshoba as a distinguished professional whose remarkable accomplishments in both journalism and medicine have earned him widespread respect.

According to Akpabio, the choice of Dr. Oshoba reflects the Chapel’s commitment to celebrating excellence and drawing from the wealth of experience of individuals who have made significant contributions to national development.

He noted that the media icon,  has demonstrated resilience, innovation and unwavering dedication to the journalism profession over the years. He further commended Dr. Oshoba for creating employment opportunities and empowering countless Nigerians through his investments in both the media and healthcare sectors.

The 2026 Press Week is expected to bring together journalists, government officials, industry leaders and civil society groups to deliberate on issues affecting the media profession and national development.

The event promises to provide a robust platform for meaningful discussions on the future of journalism and its enduring role in promoting accountability, good governance and sustainable nation-building.
